Appearance
Khalid grew to over six feet and had enormous strength. He was athletic with broad shoulders and a wide chest. His physique combined with a full thick beard and forceful personality brought Khalid much admiration in the community.
Family
Khalid was the son of Al Waleed ibn Al Mugheerah ibn Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Makhzum (after whom the clan was named) ibn Yaqza ibn Murra ibn Kab ibn Luwayy ibn Ghalib ibn Fihr ibn Malik ibn Al Nazr ibn Kinana ibn Khuzeima ibn Mudrika ibn Ilyas ibn Muzar ibn Nizar ibn Ma’add ibn Adnan ibn Udd ibn Muqawwam ibn Nahur ibn Teirah ibn Ya’rub ibn Yashjub ibn Nabit ibn Isma’il (regarded as the father of the Arabians) ibn Ibrahim (the prophet) ibn Azar ibn Nahur ibn Sarugh (or Asragh) ibn Arghu ibn Falakh ibn Eibar ibn Shalakh ibn Arfakhshaz ibn Saam ibn Noah (the prophet) ibn Lamk ibn Mattushalakh ibn Idris (the prophet) ibn Yard ibn Muhla’il ibn Qeinan ibn Anush ibn Sheis ibn Adam (the father of mankind).[1]
Hantamah bint Hisham bin Al-Mugheerah, the mother of Umar ibn Al-Khattab was Khalid’s first cousin.[2]
Khalid had four brothers Waleed, Hisham, Ammarah, Abdu Shams, and two sisters, Faktah and Fatimah.
Amr bin Hisham bin Al Mugheerah was his older cousin. Ikrimah ibn Amr ibn Hisham was Khalids favourite nephew and bosom friend.
His Youth
Born in Makkah to the Quraysh tribe of Banu Makhzum, Khalid was sent to live in the desert with a Bedouin tribe as was arab custom. He returned to his parents at the age of five or six.
Because of his fathers wealth, Khalid lived a privileged life that created a disregard for matters of finance. Lavish spending, bouts of drinking and generosity to those who appealed to him eventually lead to serious trouble. Privilege did allow Khalid to focus on his personal training. Being a Makhzumi allowed him to master all aspects of horsemanship particularly for war. His training also included combat, both on foot and on horseback. To develop his physical strength Khalid engaged in regular wrestling, often with his friend, his nephew, and cousin Umar ibn Al-Khattab. Khalid broke Umars leg during one of their matches. [3]

Chapter on Virtues
كتاب المناقب عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم
Narrated Abu Hurairah: “We camped with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) at a place, and the people began passing by. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would say: ‘Who is this, O Abu Hurairah?’ So I would say: ‘So-and-so.’ So he would say: ‘What an excellent slave of Allah this is.’ And he would say: ‘Who is this?’ So I would say: ‘So-and-so.’ So he would say: ‘What a bad slave of Allah this is.’ Until Khalid bin Al-Walid passed, so he said: ‘Who is this?’ So I said: ‘This is Khalid bin Al-Walid.’ He said: ‘What an excellent slave of Allah is Khalid bin Al-Walid, a sword from among the swords of Allah.'” [4]
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ نَزَلْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مَنْزِلاً فَجَعَلَ النَّاسُ يَمُرُّونَ فَيَقُولُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ” مَنْ هَذَا يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ” . فَأَقُولُ فُلاَنٌ . فَيَقُولُ ” نِعْمَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ هَذَا ” . وَيَقُولُ ” مَنْ هَذَا ” . فَأَقُولُ فُلاَنٌ . فَيَقُولُ ” بِئْسَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ هَذَا ” . حَتَّى مَرَّ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ فَقَالَ ” مَنْ هَذَا ” . فَقُلْتُ هَذَا خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ . فَقَالَ ” نِعْمَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ سَيْفٌ مِنْ سُيُوفِ اللَّهِ ” . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ وَلاَ نَعْرِفُ لِزَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ سَمَاعًا مِنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَهُوَ عِنْدِي حَدِيثٌ مُرْسَلٌ . قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ
