Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah al-Makhzumi (Arabic: الوليد بن المغيرة المخزومي, translit: al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīrah al-Makhzūmī, Al-Waleed) was a wealthy Chief of the Banu Makhzum. Also know as Al-Waheed (The Unique)[1] served his people as their military instructor and acquired his wealth as a trader[2], blacksmith[3], and butcher [4].
Family
Al-Walid took great pride instilling the Virtues of the Arabs in the raising of his children Khalid, Waleed, Hisham, Ammarah, Abdu Shams, and his daughters Faktah and Fatimah[5].
Response To Islam
Al-Walid along with Abu Sufyan, Abu Lahab, and Abul Jahl lead the opposition against Islam. Like Abu Sufyan, Al-walid was a man of dignity and self respect who opposed the message of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), but never resorted to undignified acts of violence or abuse. He did mention how put off about Prophethood he was,
“Is the Prophethood to be bestowed on Muhammad, while I, the greatest of the Quraysh and their elder, am to get nothing? And there is Abu Masud, the chief of Saqeef. Surely he and I are the greatest of the two towns (Makkah and Taif).”[6][7]
Ibn Hisham mentioned that Al-Walid’s statement was part of the reason for the revelation of the verse,
And they exclaimed, “If only this Quran was revealed to a great man from ˹one of˺ the two cities!”[8]
