Amr ibn Hisham

General

Amr ibn Hisham (Arabic: عمرو بن هشام‎), a member of the Quraysh belonged to the Banu Makhzum.[1]

Name and Apperance

Amr was known by the kunya Abu al-Ḥakam” (ابوالحكم – the Father of wisdom”), but because of his overly critical attitude combined with violent and aggressive behaviour towards the new religion of Islam and the Muslims, he became known as Abu Jahl (Arabic: أبو جهل‎ – the Father of Ignorance, the Ignorant One).

He was described as “a man with a face of iron, a look of iron and a tongue of iron.”[2][3]

Family

Abu Jahl’s son was Ikrimah and he was the older cousin of Khalid ibn al-Walid.

Youth

Abu Jahl had a scare on his knee that he received when Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) threw him to the ground while wrestling.[4][5]

Response To Islam

Abu Jahl along with Al-WalidAbu Sufyan, and Abu Lahab lead the opposition against Islam.

Death

Amr was killed at the Battle of Badr in front of his son Ikrimah.
