Abdullah ibn Abdul-Muttalib

Abdullah ibn Abdul-Muttalib was the father of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

Family

Abdullah was the youngest of ten brothers.

Sacrifice of the Camels

Abdul-Mutalib made an oath to sacrifice a son. Abdullah was the son, but rather than sacrifice Abdullah a ransom of 100 camels was paid.[1]

Death

Abdullah was in his early twenties[2] when he died. Abdul-Muttalib wanting the best for his son, so he encouraged Abdullah to join a caravan traveling to Ash-Sham (Syria), an opportunity to gain valuable and practical experience to increase his status within the community.

Abdullah struggled in the unfamiliar desert heat and contracted a disease on the return trip. Requiring treatment, he remained in Yathrib with his cousins from the clan of Banu An-Najjaar while the caravan continued to its final destination in Makkah. Abdullah did not recover and died shortly after.

Not seeing his son with the caravan, Abdul-Muttalib sent his eldest son Al-Harith ibn Abdul-Muttalib[3] to Yathrib support his brother in returning to Makkah. Unfortunately Al-Harith had to return to his father with the sad news that Abdullah was buried next to his uncles from Banu Adee ibn An-Najjaar.[4]
