Born ‘Abd Manaf but more commonly known by his kunya ‘Abu Talib ibn ‘Abdul-Muṭṭalib (Arabic: ابو طالب بن عبد المطلب‎; translit. Abū Ṭālib ibn ‘Abd al-Muṭṭalib) was the leader of the Banu Hashim during the early days of Prophethood. Abu Talib was a great supporter of the Prophets (ﷺ) message as well as being a staunch advocate to protect him (ﷺ), but he was not able to tear himself away from the religion of his forefathers. He was known to be soft spoken and to deal with his troubles by turning them into poetry.[1]

Names and Lineage

His full name was ‘Abd Manaf ibn Abdul-Muttalib ibn Hashim ibn Abd Manaf ibn Qusayy ibn Kilab ibn Lu’ayy ibh Ghalib ibn Fihr ibn Malik ibn an-Nadr ibn Kinanah ibn Khuzaymah ibn Madrakah ibn Iiyas ibn Mudar ibn Nizar ibn Ma’d ibn ‘Adnan.[2]

He was known by the kunya Abū Ṭālib (Seeker of knowledge).

Family

Protection of the Prophet (ﷺ)

In the early days of Islam the Quraysh sent delegations to Abu Talib in an attempt to gain support from him to cease the Prophets (ﷺ) message.[3]

Death

‘Abd Manaf died in the tenth year of Prophethood, the same year as Khadijah bint Khuwaylid about three years prior to hijrah during what is known as the Year of Sorrow (Year of Grief), near the end of the Quraysh three year boycott of Banu Hashim. [4]
