Al-‘Ateeq

General

Al’Ateeq (Arabic: العَتِيْق translit.: Atiq) has a number of meanings: old, ancient, or noble. It can also mean someone who has been freed from unpleasant circumstances like the bonds of slavery.

Companions with the name Al-Ateeq

Abu Bakr Al-Ateeq

Abu Bakr was called Al-Ateeq because he was known for his good character, his noble countenance, and was Allah’s freed one from the Hellfire.[1]

Abu Bakr was refered to by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) who once said, You are the the Ateeq (the freed one) of Allah from the Hellfire. [2].

Another narration from Aishah, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to Abu Bakr , “Rejoice, for you are the ‘Ateeq of Allah from the Hellfire.[3][4]

Another wording which is considered weak; narrated ‘Aishah: that Abu Bakr entered upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), so he said: “You are Allah’s ‘Ateeq from the Fire.” From that day on he was called ‘Ateeq. [5]

Some historians believe Abu Bkar was given the name because of the nobleness of his features [6] while others say that he acquired the name later in life because of how long he lived as an individual filled with goodness; based on the meaning of old or ancient.[7]

It was also said that whenever Abu Bakr’s mother, Salmah bint Sakhr had a child, they would die almost immediately, but when Abu Bakr was born he lived. So she said, “O Allah, this (child) is your freed one from death, so favour me with him. [8]
