by Khawlah bint Hakim (Arabic: خولة بنت حكيم transliterations include Khawla bint Hakeem) was the wife of Uthman ibn Madh’oon and one of the first companions of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ).[1]
Description
Khawlah was a strong and vocal women who was not afraid to approach and discuss matters with the Prophet (ﷺ) even those of a personal nature. A mature women who was known for being farsighted in matters and had deep faith and love for Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ).[2]
Khawlah and The Prophets Personal Affairs
Khawlah noticed the loneliness the Prophet (ﷺ) struggled with after the death of Khadijah bint Khuwaylid. Many were afraid to approach him (ﷺ) when it came to personal matters but Khawlah was a women who spoke her mind. To help remedy his (ﷺ) situation Khawlah suggested he (ﷺ) remarry by taking a matron and a virgin to help him with is needs. Sawdah bint Zama’ah was suggested as the matron to help the Prophet (ﷺ) run the household and the virgin was Aishah bint Abu Bakr to help mend his broken heart.[3]

Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas narrated: From Khawlah bint Al Hakim As-Sulamiyyah, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever stops at a stopping place and then says: ‘I seek refuge in Allah’s Perfect Words from the evil of what He has created, (A`ūdhu bi-kalimātillāhit-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq)’ nothing shall harm him until he departs from that stopping place of his.”[4]
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ، عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الأَشَجِّ، عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، عَنْ خَوْلَةَ بِنْتِ حَكِيمٍ السُّلَمِيَّةِ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ “ مَنْ نَزَلَ مَنْزِلاً ثُمَّ قَالَ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ شَيْءٌ حَتَّى يَرْتَحِلَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ ذَلِكَ ” . قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ . وَرَوَى مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الأَشَجِّ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ . وَرُوِيَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلاَنَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الأَشَجِّ وَيَقُولُ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنْ خَوْلَةَ . قَالَ وَحَدِيثُ اللَّيْثِ أَصَحُّ مِنْ رِوَايَةِ ابْنِ عَجْلاَنَ

It was narrated from Khawlah bint Hakim that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “If anyone of you, when he stops to camp (while on a journey), says A’udhu bi kalimatil-lahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created), then nothing will harm him in that place until he moves on.” [5]

It was narrated that Khawlah bint Hakim said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about a woman who has a wet dream and he said: ‘If she sees water, let her perform Ghusl.'” [6]
أَخْبَرَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَطَاءً الْخُرَاسَانِيَّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ خَوْلَةَ بِنْتِ حَكِيمٍ، قَالَتْ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنِ الْمَرْأَةِ تَحْتَلِمُ فِي مَنَامِهَا فَقَالَ “ إِذَا رَأَتِ الْمَاءَ فَلْتَغْتَسِلْ

Chapter: What Has Been Related About The Love Of A Parent For His Child
باب مَا جَاءَ فِي حُبِّ الْوَلَدِ
‘Umar bin ‘Abdul-‘Aziz said: ‘a righteous woman, Khawlah bint Hakim said: “The Messenger of Allah came out during the middle of the day, while holding one of the sons of his daughter in his arms. He was saying: ‘You are what makes them stingy, cowardly and ignorant. And you are but Raihanillah.[7]
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ أَبِي سُوَيْدٍ، يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، يَقُولُ زَعَمَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ الصَّالِحَةُ خَوْلَةُ بِنْتُ حَكِيمٍ قَالَتْ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَهُوَ مُحْتَضِنٌ أَحَدَ ابْنَىِ ابْنَتِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ “ إِنَّكُمْ لَتُبَخِّلُونَ وَتُجَبِّنُونَ وَتُجَهِّلُونَ وَإِنَّكُمْ لَمِنْ رَيْحَانِ اللَّهِ ” . قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَالأَشْعَثِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِهِ . وَلاَ نَعْرِفُ لِعُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ سَمَاعًا مِنْ خَوْلَةَ

It was narrated from Khawlah bint Hakim that: She asked the Messenger of Allah about a woman who sees in her dream that which a man sees. He said: “She does not have to take a bath unless she has an orgasm, just as man does not have to take a bath unless he has an orgasm.[8]
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ خَوْلَةَ بِنْتِ حَكِيمٍ، أَنَّهَا سَأَلَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ عَنِ الْمَرْأَةِ تَرَى فِي مَنَامِهَا مَا يَرَى الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ “ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهَا غُسْلٌ حَتَّى تُنْزِلَ كَمَا أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ غُسْلٌ حَتَّى يُنْزِلَ
