Numerous expeditions occurred during the Prophet’s (ﷺ) ten years in Madinah. The intentions of each expedition varied and included defensive battles, reconnaissance missions, economic expeditions and some for diplomatic purposes. The expeditions are categorized by the twenty six missions the Prophet (ﷺ) actively took part in which are know as Ghazawat (Arabic: غزوات | Expeditions) and the thirty-eight expeditions he (ﷺ) did not participate in which are known as Sarayya.
