The Prophets (ﷺ) Sunnah Regarding Anger

General

The Prophet (ﷺ) on many occasions warned about the dangers of anger and provided numerous methods to help us control and prevent anger. He spoke about how true strength is not physical or in the ability to dominate another but true strength is about controlling our actions. When we are angry it is easy to react and commit harmful acts: insults, mocking, foul language, intimidation, hitting, smashing and cruelty, but to be able to control one self and act in the best possible way is what is a true example of strength.

Lessons

  • True strength is not physical dominance of others; true strength comes from control of ones rage
  • Fighting while in a state of rage is not fighting to exalt Allah
  • Fever (rage) is like fire from hell
  • Controlling ones anger when able to unleash it can lead to great rewards on the Day of Judgement
  • Don’t make judgements, rulings or decisions while angry
  • Anger for tribalism leads to a death of ignorance of divine guidance (Jahiliyyah)
  • Change position to remove anger
  • Shaytaan works hard to make us angry particularly those closest to us; family and friends

Dealing With Anger

  • If one becomes angry perform ablution (wudu) to quench the rage
  • Declare with sincere intention, “I seek refuge with Allah from Satan the accursed.”
  • Remain silent
  • Change position when angry
    • while standing, sit down
    • if anger continues lie down

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man said to the Prophet (ﷺ) , “Advise me! “The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Do not become angry and furious.” The man asked (the same) again and again, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said in each case, “Do not become angry and furious.”[2]

Abu Musa Ash’ari, that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about fighting in the way of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, a man who fights out of rage or out of family pride. He raised his head towards him-and he did so because the man was standing and said: Who fights that the word of Allah be exalted; fights in the way of Allah.[5]

Chapter: The Virtue Of One Who Controls Himself At Times Of Anger, And What Takes Away Anger

Abdullah b. Mas’ud reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Whom do you count as” Raqub” amongst you? They (his Companions) said: One who has no children (the children are born unto him but they do not survive). Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: He is not a Raqub but Raqub is one who does not find his child as the forerunner (in Paradise). He then said: Whom do you count as a wrestler amongst you? We said: He who wrestles with persons. He said: No, it is not he but one who controls himself when in a fit of rage.[8]

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The strong-man is not one who wrestles well but the strong man is one who controls himself when he is in a fit of rage.[9]

Sulaiman b. Surad reported that two persons abused each other in the presence of Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) and the eyes of one of them became red as embers and the veins of his neck were swollen. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: I know of a wording, if he were to utter that, his fit of rage (would be no more and that wording is): I seek refuge with Allah from Satan the accursed. The person said: Do you find any madness in me? Ibn al-‘Ala’ said: Do you see it? And he made no mention of the person.[11]

Sulaiman b. Surad reported that two persons abused each other in the presence of Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) and one of them fell into a rage and his face became red. Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) saw him and said: I know of a wording; if he were to utter that, he would get out (of the fit of anger) (and the wording is): I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed. Thereupon, a person went to him who had heard that from Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) and said to him: Do you know what Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said? He (the Holy Prophet) said: I know of a wording; if he were to say that, (the fit) would be no more (and the words are): I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed. Sahl bim Mu’adh bin Anas Al-Juhani narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever suppresses his rage while he is able to unleash it, Allah will call him before the heads (leaders) of creation on the Day of Judgement, so that he can inform Him of which of the Hur he would like.”[21]

Sitting and lying down

Abu Umama said, “Shaytan comes to one of you in bed after his family has covered him and wished him good night. He throws sticks, stones or other things on him to make him angry with his family. When he feels that, he should not get angry with his family.’ He said, ‘It is part of the work of Shaytan.'”[22]
